If online gaming was not on consoles games like Call of Duty would not be as popular as they are now. Also Said above^ games will have a much larger focus on Single player then focusing on a crappy Multiplayer just to make your game more appealing and form keeping it off the used game shelfs. Also online services like Xbox live and PSN wouldn't be as big if there was no online gaming.
