Probably the first time this was officially done was around 1993 back then Sonic was the most recognise character/ mascot overall, gaming related and otherwise, ahead of Mario and even beating out Disney's Mickey Mouse. Thanks to Sega's marketing blitz back then. Sonic and crew had a cartoon series was in numerous ads he was pratically everywhere!!............... fast forward to now ......... well he sure had better days.
