This is my opinion:
1980's: Pac-Man & Mario.
1990's - Mario & Sonic
2000's - Mario & Pikachu
Early 2010's - Mario & Angry Birds?
I don't care for Angry Birds, but I have to admit. They EXPLODED with popularity from 2009 to 2012.
I always think of the Video Game characters like Cartoon Characters.
First, there was Felix the Cat who was popular for a few years (Just Like Pac-Man)
Then came Mickey Mouse, which everyone knows (Mario)
Then, Bugs Bunny came and made Mickey Mouse look "not cool" (Sonic)
But Bugs Bunny had a decline for many years (Similar to Sonic from to late 90's to the early 2000's)
Mickey Mouse is still very popular today (Just like Mario)
Felix the Cat & Bugs Bunny have had many movies and TV shows to try to revive them. (Similar to the Pac-Man World series and the new Pac-Man cartoon, and the Sonic Cartoon, Comic, and newer games)
That cartoon opinion thing probally did not make sence. :P
Overall, Mario is the champion in my opinion.
