How do you know 200k will make it a profitable venture? I hear this sort of statement a lot on here, ninty fans demanding games get ported to Wii U regardless of historic sales or apparent gamer demographics, with the justification that a port should be cheap and therefore profitable with low sales. But I never see any evidence to back that up. Re-designing your game engine to run on a very different architecture isn't easy, you don't just press the 'compile to Wii-U' button and start burning the disks. Massive games like GTA takes years of beta testing and QA as well, which they'd have to redo for a new engine. The original Xbox got GTA because the PC got GTA 3 (the PC was the lead platform for GTA 1 and 2, with PS1 getting ports) and the Xbox was a PC. GTA 3 first came to PS2 because Sony paid for the timed exclusivity. 360 got FF because at the time the PS3 wasn't going well and didn't look able to support SE's 5 million sales target that they were banking on to make the game profitable. There is nothing stopping Nintendo paying money to Rockstar to ensure a Wii-U port happens. Rockstar are a business, they'd do anything if the risk is worth the reward, and if Nintendo take some of that risk by co-funding a port then Rockstar would likely make one (like they did with GTA3 for PS2). To date that hasn't happened, but if Nintendo wants these type of games then they'll probably need to, especially when their install-base is so low. And before you say 'but ps4 and xbone's install base is 0', the ps4 and xbone 1) are the natural sucessors to the consoles that have supported the previous games (so lower risk) and 2) are basically suped up PC's (which lowers porting costs, though I'd still say they'd be looking for sales far higher than 200k, which is likely given point 1). Its not some conspiracy, its just business. The question is why isn't Ninty buying 3rd party support like MS did in the early days of 360 when they raked in billions in profits with the Wii? What are they doing with that money? It doesn't seem like they spend it on more dev teams, so what is it being used for? |
What are you going on about? I don't care if GTA5 comes to Wii U. I'm just saying it makes sense. Ubisoft said it was easy to port PS360 titles to Wii U and cost about a million bucks to do it. If Rockstar sold 100k they would easily cover costs. The rest is gravy.
