I suppose it's actually possible Sony would do that. Unlikely, but possible.
The Vita's sales have been just bad enough that I have to wonder if they've thought about closing the factory line down until there are more sales, and closing or restarting a factory line ISN'T CHEAP. The Wii U, by contrast, has had a worse, but much shorter sales drought.
A bundle like this might translate to bleeding out money to the consumers like crazy, but if it's that or shutting the line down for a few months? It's a major loss one way or the other, but at least the one has a chance of turning a profit long-term and won't involve firing temp employees only to hire them again in a few months.
Still not likely. Vita sales are up just enough that a factory going dark is not going to happen.
