They're not charity but their main purpose is to make sure their consumers is satisfied mate. And trying to milk their consumers the best they can is definitely not the way to go.

Plus, I don't think Sony makes money/sell a lot of those games. From what I know PSN titles sales are very low. A lot of great names have already speak about it. What will they lost by making those games free if they're not selling a lot of them ? Almost nothing.

On the other side, if they make them free, consumers would be happy and some new consumers may come. That's pretty basic and yes that's that simple.

A companies primary purpose is to make a profit. Now that may be just 1 cent profit depending on how small/private the company is. But a mega corporation like SONY? Their purpose is to make as much profit as they can.

If people are willing to buy HD collections for $30 then they would be _negligent_ not to do that. Now to your point, there is grey area where prices are too high, bussiness practices make the bussiness look bad and turn away customers, etc. Thus a company has to figure out where they need to position themselves, through advertising, customer goodwill, low pricing on some items, gifts (PSN+), etc, to maximize their overall profit.

PSN prices come in large varieties. Some PS1 games average $5.99 with some (FF games) going all the way up to $9.99. PS2 games average $9.99 with some very few going up to $14.99.

Keeping in mind that PSN+ already essentially gives games away for free each month, gives discounts on other games. And yes it is essentially giving these games away because the games normal costs go well beyond the subscription fee. If they give all these PS1/PS2 games away, they risk losing substantial potential profit. Just because they may only sell 100 copies of a single PSN game a month doesn't mean it doesn't add up to a substantial sum for all the games they offer on PSN.

These HD collections are the same. The cost of development for these HD collection is extremely low compared to the originals for sure. It's also guaranteed that some of these are going to sell moderately to very well. I doubt a single one of these collections is going to sell next to nothing. That is a huge potential for profit and very very few people are going to complain loudly about it. Thus its a win for makers of those games.

Any new customers that come along won't come close to the already large pocket of existing customers that may buy these games. SONY only have to provide good _customer_ satisfaction, meaning people who buy things.
