The only problem with the league of legends model is that the game balance is very dependent on counterpicking, and since you have to grind or pay to unlock champions, that makes it kind of like a pay to win.

I don't feel counterpicking is at all important below the pro level. And honestly I've been playing the game for 3 months and with no money put in I have enough IP to have all the necessary runes, and 20 champions I chose that cover enough playstyles to not feel without options. And before I got there, I was in the training levels 1-30 where anything goes and there is literally no meta required.

Other than that though it is a good business model, besides when they raised the prices of some of their skins, that was weird.

To be fair it's their only real income, of course skins are overpriced because the game is free. But they are completely cosmetic after all: you need never buy one and really the base champion design almost always looks better. Except for Spirit Guard Udyr.

It's never felt unfair or a grind to me, and this is coming from someone that quit Runescape in under an hour because things weren't happening fast enough.
