Final Fantasy is not a dead series. It's a struggling series.

Perfect Dark is dead.
Legend of Dragoon is dead.
Parasite Eve is dead.
Chrono is dead.

What do these have in common? We aren't going to see another game in any of these franchises. EVER. There is no chance for any of these series to financially redeem themselves. And for most of these, that's a real shame.

Really, Final Fantasy isn't even the worst offender with the game series that keeps being horrible. XIII had a few faults--OK, it had a lot of faults. Even someone like me who likes XIII admits that--but it basically failed because it tried to do a great thing and failed. I'll chastise Square Enix for failing, but I have a hard time being upset about it because they clearly tried very, very hard.

That, and XIII-2 did show that Square Enix is willing to learn and improve where they can.

Resident Evil, on the other hand, is the fecal sandwich stuck in the toilet's U-bend, stinking up the house. My thoughts immediately after finishing RE4 were "That was a great game" and "I know I never want to play a Resident Evil game ever again. I can't put my finger on why, but I feel like this series is about to go downhill in a big way." And yet somehow it still sells.
