The new consoles dont really have the "it" factor right now yet, they seem like good systems but all of their big releases can be found either on the 360 or ps3, and no backwards compatibility hurts them big time. Not to start a flame war, but the 360 is truly on its last leg. Just with the line up for the next 9 months I can't really see Microsoft pushing it too far past 2014. Sony on the other hand still have many first party titles in the pipe line and this could negatively affect their new console. This remains to be seen but a price drop on both consoles are really going to shake things up.
