I'm kinda stunned the GCN only managed 21.7 million units. It was so affordable, being $149 within like eight months.

The only reason Nintendo cut the price of the GCN to $149 (from $199) six months in is because Sony cut the price of the PS2 to $199 (from $299) first.

Around 80% of all PS2's sold were priced at $199 or under, it was also what most would consider affordable.

Nintendo has traditionally cut the price of their consoles fairly early though.

The SNES, N64, and GameCube all received $50 price reductions within like their first 10 months on the market, so the GameCube wasn't really anything all that shocking in that regard at the time.

The Wii is really the big exception to the rule, but it was selling faster than hotcakes.

N64 price cut was the same thing, retaliation from PS1 price cut, not sure about SNES but could very well have been to match Genesis price.
