For awhile, Microsoft, or at least the people in charge of the Xbox division, almost seemed like they were going out of their way to breed distrust and uncertainty. The XO bore the brunt of that.
It's going to take a little while for people to NOT question everything Microsoft does, and to reply with "yeah, but ..." after everything they say. Gamers are suspicious for a reason. At Gamescom and beyond, Microsoft is going to need to back up everything and be as transparent as possible.
If they can do that then I think any resentment toward the XO will fade away inside of a year. After all, people had reasons to be resentful toward both the PS3 and the 3DS and they both recovered very well.
