This is prooved once a new version of Windows is released, they essentiall stop selling their last version on new PCs, they do this because they have a monopoly on the market, much like Apple do with iPod/iPhone/iPod (or did with iPhone in terms of OS). Apple DRM on iTunes existed because it was the early in it's implementation of downloadable music, everyone started using it and it became the standard. When moving to iPad, it was the first touch tablet PC which worked smoothly and has mass appeal so integrating iTunes into it, including their DRM was an easy step.
In the gaming market, they didn't have this foothold, like they do in the PC OS market and like Apple do in the tablet market. Maybe they presumed that because of the millions they were making from XBLive they could impletement such features presuming people would just continue paying and buy the Xbone.

Yours is the best theory on the subject until now, I really can believe that, makes a lot of sense. Some developers on MS said "Let´s do what Apple does". Another one said: "Great idea, but also, let´s do what we do with Windows".
Thinking gamers are as dumb as the other mass markets is a huge mistake. We are kind dumb, but not THAT dumb.
