dear nintendo,
I love the mario series, have for a long time. It's one of the greatest things to happen to the gaming industry ever. A great set of core characters with some fun/varied enemies. I can understand if at times there is a reluctance to expand outside your comfort zone, but over the last decade and a half, your character creation process has often come off as lazy.
at the beginning (super mario world/1991 and before) there was:
mario
luigi
princess toadstool (peach.... more or less)
toad
yoshi
donkey kong
king koopa (bowser.... more or less)
these were the key players.
then we got:
1. wario (evil mario)
2. wario's girlfriend (more then likely a peach spinoff).... to appear in MK: wii
3. waluigi (evil luigi)
4. waluigi's girlfriend (more then likely a daisy spinoff).... to appear in MK: wii
5. baby mario (young mario)
6. baby luigi (young luigi)
7. bowser jr (young bowser)
8. baby peach (young peach).... to appear in MK: wii
9. toadette (female toad)
10. toadsworth (old toad)
11. daisy (alternate peach)
of course donkey kong went off to do dk: country where we got:
1. diddy kong (donkey's nephew)
2. dixie kong (diddy's girlfriend)
3. baby kong (an insult to life)
you create some really cool enemies, why can't you put at least a little thought into the rest of your characters?
looking forward to MK: wii, where there hopefully won't be too many palette swop characters.

-edit-
it should be noted, so im told, that daisy appeared first in 89 in 'super mario land' for the game boy.
also, i forgot donkey kong jr.... but he first appeared way back in 82.
