Wide open system?  What are you talking about?  I've said nothing about a wide open system.  I have no clue where you got that from.  Refining your process so that developers spend their time developing rather than jumping through hoops does not mean "a wide open system".  The PS4 doesn't have a wide open system and no one is complaining about that.  What are you even saying, that red tape and muddied communication is a good thing?

Honestly, I give up on this subject.  Anyone who complains the least little bit gets attacked, even the whole of small game development gets attacked, which is bloody stupid.  As someone who is into gaming for games, it kind of sickens me to see people turn against games for the sake of loyalty to a console.

This whole thing has left me in a state of shock.

I'm talking about the content in the article and the replies in the thread. The main issue a small handful of indies have is the inability to self-publish. They want a system where anyone can publish their own thing. If Oddworld Inhabitants could publish their own games on XBLA, Stranger's Wrath HD would be on there already. The "red tape and muddied communication" is based on what? Lanning? The guy who craps on whoever he isn't currently working with and has done so since the PS1 days? The FEZ guy bitching about patch fees? It's cute the way you let a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch.

I never said or implied slowing down game development is a good thing. What I believe is a good thing though, as a gamer, is a platform where the crappiest games are not picked up by publishers and thus never see the light of day on my platform, and a pricing policy that ensures the games that do get released, are done so after extensive bug testing so that the future updates are minimal. MS recently changed this policy and now don't charge for updates. We'll wait and see how that goes.

I don't see anyone in this thread attacking you, but I do you see attacking many people in this thread from your first reply and on. I mean, lets see.. the people who disagree with you are akin to religious zealouts, just mindless, rabid fanboys lashing out in the most primal fashion. The results of which, just sicken you right down to your core. Isn't that about right? Step off the high horse please.

Attack me?  Why would they do that, I'm not a developer.  Huh?

What I see are people bad-mouthing indie games in general because a few have come out and complained about Microsoft policies.  That, to me, is absurd.  Every single developer who has said a negative thing about Microsoft's procedures has been torn down and called desperate or stupid.  What do you think I should say about that, that it's all on the money?  That the very act of saying Microsoft needs to improve means these developers are crap?  Give me a break.

Also, you seem to be building a false argument.  The ability to self-publish does not mean the platform holder has to accept a game.  The two things have zero to do with one another.  Trying to link them in order to down-play self-publishing is nonsensical.  The entire "but it will be flooded with worhless games" argument has no relevance to this discussion.  Most of the more successful of the small developers CAN get a publisher, they just think the need to share their revenue for NOTHING is a complete waste.  You think Machinarium couldn't get a publisher?

“Microsoft just refused Machinarium for XBLA after a half year of talking with them. They like the game and know it would be very successful on their platform, but they don’t want to support games which aren’t Microsoft exclusives. Machinarium isn’t, since we’ve also released versions for Mac and Linux. We have another option to approach some big publisher to bring the game to XBLA, which is quite absurd to do and lose maybe a large part of revenue because of that.”  --  http://www.xblafans.com/indie-adventure-game-machinarium-refused-for-xbla-41.html

Microsoft is losing out on some quality games because of their policies.  Maybe not a lot of games, but you'd think a person who really cared about gaming would hate to lose some good experiences for nothing.
