I kinda agree, although I'm not sure my reasons are the same as Tom's.

Sony haven't really cared much about Japan for a long time now.  I feel Sony + Atlus would mean a lot of Atlus' smaller IP's would get dumped or lost in the transition.

Of course, I could be wrong, because I feel Sony are trying harder this gen with Japan, but still.  Considering how much they cared in the 7th gen (barely at all), it seems like buying a team like Atlus just wouldn't fit.
