I think most guys that download the game was thinking to buy it... the fan support here is really strong... I can see something that didn't like GT games downloading the demo just for fun.
Even some haters here in VGC bought GT5 and will buy GT6 
And 600k is the numbers of guys that completed the last time trial to participate the competition... there are guys that are trainning into the first four time trials that didn't put you in the competition.
Edit - There ara guys that have the demo but can't participate like Canadians... you can download but receive a warning saying you are not elegible for the competition... you can race the time trial BTW... so the 600k exclude these guys with PSN IDs in countries not covered by GT Academy.
