Xenoblade supported multiple controllers, so I don't doubt that this game will, as well.
And this is definitely an action RPG. Xenoblade plays a bit like a simplified MMO (simplified in that you bring an auto-attack, 8 different skills/abilities, and a special attack for each party member into each battle, as opposed to the dozens of abilities you have access to in a typical MMO).
One of my friends got into the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn beta and he says it reminds him of Xenoblade, so if you've been checking that out, the battle system in X will likely be somewhat similar.
