@dis: I didn't say that Windows phone sucks... if I thought that way why would I have tried to talk my wife into getting one? I said its floundering which has to do with market share, and disjointed product lines over the years. Nothing against the performance of the OS, but it doesn't appeal to me specifically which is fine as I do see its relevance for other consumers, which is actually more important to myself for other reasons. I can't say I was shocked to find out that Nokia Lumia 1020 was a windows phone, but can't say either that I follow nokia / windows partnership closely enough to really know by default.
The article you posted doesn't give any data numbers to back up its claims, but I'll assume the information is reliable. Even still 3rd place out of 3 isn't really saying anything. If mobile growth has reached a certain saturation point then the headlining point of that article is moot and virtually meaningless if the windows phone sales are still less than I-phones and android sales individually. I mean if the market is only growing by say 1m a year (smart devices) but already has a 10m install base then the market share is only increasing by 10%. If windows phone install base is 100k and is increasing by 60k that is 60% percent growth which would be 6x the growth of the overall market. Therefore that article you posted is not much more than fluff as its fairly irrelevant and misleading and does not reflect at all how well Windows phones are selling as their sales are reflected as a part of growth in the overall market. Even comparing its growth to say iPhones wouldn't be a fair comparison as you would get similarly disjointed numbers as the product with the smallest install base will always have the potential to have the greatest increase. Compared to a product with a large install base could still outsell the smaller product, but numbers could be spun to say that another product with significantly lower sales is doing better due to its percentage increase, when it isn't really doing better by comparison to another product at all just better than it did previously.
