No offence taken...because of what I do.  I am involved with monetization of TV shows through online IP advertising. This includes things like streaming websites, apps and on demand IP streaming.  What I do on day to day basis, people I talk to and conferences I go to give me insight in to future trends in advertising. If Microsoft was planning to offer user targeting based on Kinect data in the near future, this is something that would have been mentioned somewhere in the industry.

Microsoft came in and presented some stuff to us about Windows 8 and Xbox apps and advertising earlier this year. Actually if you look back you can find my quotes on this forum dating 6 months ago of me saying Xbox 720 will offer a cable integrated streaming experience... Currently all Microsoft wants is companies making apps for Windows 8, Windows phone 8 and Xbox One/360. They are offering advertising incentives if you do make an app. They want content and apps on their platforms, not to become a content provider themselves.

I'm sorry but the idea that MS is NOT trying to be a content provider doesn't make any sense. Why include, and BRAG about having the most television content on the xb1? You have your football. You have your sports, you have netflix, and the dozen of similar streaming apps, you even have to pay to access them (like a cable subscriber), you have your gamer tv. And they say, "this is your One device"....and to use cable...you need a special cable box on top of it all. Not just any cable box, but a special microsoft cable box that acts as an in between. If they didn't want to go into content provision, why set themselves up as 'the one device to rule them all'...'the only device you need'?

Do you really think MS won't be collecting data on what you're watching? It has it's own damn cable search menu! You literally use the xbox to navigate your cable. Saying "Oh they're not interested", is basically calling them incompetant, because they have the perfect opportunity to gather info.....but aren't interested. They aren't interested in what's currently one of the most lucrative markets in the world.

Maybe they won't be doing the advertising, but they definitely will be sending your info over to all their partners.

If you don't think they will do this, simply because you haven't heard from the grapevine, it's probably because either MS is keeping it close to their chest, or they're actively downplaying it. We already know that MS will be tailoring its ads toward the user's taste. That's just a step away from hundreds of millions of dollars in user information sales.

You're just talking conspiracies happening in your head. Go read Xbox One cable box spec again.

"Connect your cable or satellite box to Xbox One and watch all your favorite television shows right through the console. All your favorite channels. All your favorite shows..."

No special cable box needed...

Besides Microsoft is already collecting all kinds of data on your Xbox Live and your viewing/playing habbits. Netflix is doing this as well when you go in to their app. Everyone is pretty much.  Cable companies are already collecing data on viewing habbits of users through cable with their high end cable boxes. This isn't anything new...

You give Microsoft Advertising way more credit in saying that they are competent enough to pull off something like this and blindside the advertising industry. That part of the company is a trainwreck for the most part... Look up what happened with their 6 billion writeoff with AQuantive advertising deal they signed few years back.

My apologies, I thought I remembered reading that cable would require a 99$ set-top box, but I guess not.

But no, excuses are besides the point. I don't care about what they're using for advertising purposes. I didn't write any of my posts with the intention of demonizing MS as spies. All I did was state what the goal seemed to be, and it just looks like you're confirming that and arguing some other points. Ok, they're not becoming advertising suppliers. Ok, they're not becoming a content provider (though I disagree)....but they sure as hell are using this entire system to sell your info.

Like I said though. I don't care what they sell. Everyone does it. For some consumers who want the conveniences of kinect and the like, it's awesome.

For a gamer who has no interest in having "the one device (that still needs a set-top box)" or kinect, it's not awesome.

There are two viewpoints to consider. The business minded who thinks this is a great idea, and the gamer who thinks they're getting ripped off.
