Disregard the people trying to tell you to get a tablet.
It is a fad and its not any good for gaming.

The Vita is quite good, you will be surprised, but at the moment things are shaky. Theres a huge library of PSP games out for it, aswell as PSone classics and indie games. There are regular games aswell but they can come at a slower pace than the 3DS.
If those things i mentioned dont interest you at all, then the Vita isnt for you, for now at least, unless you cant wait to get Persona 4/ Souls sacrifice. Toukiden/Freedom wars/ Tearaway/ killzone Merc / Ys celceta.
There are more good games that can come out in time but havent been confirmed like PSO2, God Eater 2 and the Tales titles (tales wont show up this year, next year the earliest if they come at all).

3DS has plenty of good nintendo games. But i will admit that while i dont have many i am aiming at quality. The biggest difference is that the Vita can work any genre with their controls, while i feel the 3DS is only good for Nintendo titles or RPG's. I got 3 titles on my 3DS (Zelda OOT3D, Tales of the abyss and Fire emblem awakening. I am planning to get Pokemon Y, Zelda lttp 2, Bravely default and Sonic lost world).

On the Vita i have: Wipeout 2048, Assassins creed 3 Liberation, Soul sacrifice, Persona 4 golden, Shinobido 2, Mortal kombat, Street fighter x tekken. I am planning to get Ys celceta later this year. I also got several PSP games like Gods eater burst, Valkyria chronicles 2 and Ys seven (between others).

As you can see its easy to conclude that the Vita has a wider array of appealing genres, but in terms of future prospects its still not clear. Were told Gamescom will be Vita focused, we shall see.
