Anyone smart enough to explain all this? :p

Looks like it's actually far more than 2 or 3 dollars per unit. BD Player = $9. Could also be playback drive = $7. So it could actually be that he is right in that Sony gets 2 or 3 dollars per sale. Then they also get a few cents per disc

Microsoft negotiated a deal with the Blu-Ray association quite a long time ago prior to Windows 7.  My guess is that parts of it are still in effect.

For instance, Microsoft doesn't use any of the Blu-Ray software, they developed their own for Windows.  Otherwise, every Windows installation would require Java for Blu-Ray playback, and it doesn't.

The pricing structure is interesting, but I doubt relates directly to what Microsoft is paying.  Sony and Microsoft, for instance, would have easily negotated pricing for either technologies Sony is using of Microsoft's or Windows licenses.

So I doubt Microsoft is paying anything, they're just not making as much on something else.
