obviously some alien walked up to some dude and was like "greetings" and the dude got freaked out and ran thats why they dont just show themselfs.

Or maybe a part of thier history has already revealed that if you go to an
"un-advanced planet" like ours, and present yourself without warning or
"time to understand" it will cause catastrophic panic of unimaginable proportions. as you know history is here so we dont repeat it.
