Tri-fire pretty much eliminated any perceivable microstutter for me, but you really shouldn't need Tri-fire to have an acceptable experience.
It rears it's ugly head constantly on my AMD system with dual 6950's unlocked into 6970's though.

With that said, 2x 7970's are not only cheaper than the 7990, but faster too! I always saw the 7990 as pointless, if you are running a system which can handle that card, you are going to have more than one PCI-E slot anyway making it a pretty redundant card.

Just a shame that no single card can push the resolution I'm running with acceptable framerates, I would be all over that like flies to poop, so I really don't have a choice but to go multi-GPU.
