Man, you hijacked the thread, but it was damn hilarious.
OT: Most digital clocks have a special chip called an RTC or real-time clock. They have a special crystal in them that resonates at a designed frequency when you put power through them. The frequency they resonate is usualy twice a second.
Due to the fact that not every crystal can be manufactured exactly the same, not all RTC chips provide exactly the same timing. The tolerances for RTC depend on the manufacturer. Some can be very accurate, but some cheap ones suck (maybe the one in the PS2 based on comments of a previous poster).
