Barring some major screwup from Sony, I don't see how the XB1 can outsell the PS4 long term.

Even this gen, the PS3 was able to outsell the 360 despite having a higher price for the entire generation. For the next gen, the XB1 will be priced $100 higher, will be launching concurrently with the PS4, and just came off a wave of bad PR. The PS4 will easily dominate Europe given that it's lower priced, has the same games as the XB1 that consumers want to buy (Call of Duty, Fifa), and has a significantly stronger brand name. The PS4 won't even face the same competition from Nintendo that they did with the Wii because the Wii U is a complete sales failure and has essentially no market presence. And that's just for Europe.

In Japan, the PS4 will be launching against a struggling Wii U, and basically nothing else in the console space. The PS3 is slowly waning away and the XB1 is a non-factor. Although I think the PS4 will have a slow start in Japan due to an initial lack of compelling games, it will dominate the XB1 long term in the region. There's really no competition. America is the one region where MS has a definite advantage, and I wouldn't be surprised if the XB1 sells more lifetime there. However, the difference will be marginal and the gap will certainly be a lot smaller than the one between the PS3 and 360 in America in the 7th gen. The XB1 won't have the advantage of a lower price point or launching a year earlier. Also, Halo and Gears are not the system sellers they once were, so Microsoft will have to either create new large IPs or become the standard system for third party games.

Either way, Sony has a huge advantage in EU and Japan, as well as the various other nations around the world which prefer Sony. MS will have an advantage in America, but it likely will be much smaller than last gen and won't be enough to make up the gap between the two consoles in the rest of the world.

I can almost guarantee Sony takes this.
