- Despite raising $3.3m on an asking price of only $400k, Double Fine is running out of money to finish Broken Age/Double Fine Adventure
- The schedule was also slipping to 2015 (initial promise was October 2012)
- They're splitting the game into two parts, and making content cuts on top of that, so the Part 1 of the game can come out January 2014
- The cash shortfall will be funded by Double Fine's own money, and by selling Part 1 via Steam Early Access
- Backers still do get the full game at no extra cost
My opinion:
(Edit: I have no problem with Kickstarter the service, only the wild overpromsing of most of its big name game projects)
Everyone should have seen this coming. Full games of the promised quality and scope just cannot be delivered on Kickstarter budgets or within the stated times. As Double Fine's game is the poster child for KS games, this does not bode well for less financially secure or experienced efforts by others. Double Fine's second team is now working on Massive Chalice: what will happen when the same problems happen to that?
Now we all know what it feels like to publish a Tim Schafer game. - Neogaf
