I think this is true. Ghibli films are treated as Pixar films (great, but for kids) and most other shows are treated with a kind of cautious feelings because of unfamiliarity. I do not know about television.  I will say in the age of internet you can access things on your own schedule.  Crunchy Roll is a good site as well as various localization ones (Funimation, etc.).

You stated 90% of anime airs after midnight that create a perception.  I was countering that internet age has no schedule of when things are on.  From my experience more and more people are abandoning traditional cable/satellite model for internet and services like Netflix and/or Hulu.
