The only game I can think of in a type of situation like this is Persona 4, except I didn't despise it the first time around. Rather I just didn't get hooked until I came back to play it when I got P4 Golden. The game didn't really catch on with me the first time because it felt really text-heavy and there was a lot of things in the game to wrap my head around, like having to plan your days out and all the different mechanics with persona customizations and the like. Maybe it's because every other jrpg I've played, they were all pretty straightforward, idk. It just felt like there was a lot to get past during the beginning of the game. But once I sat down and started putting hours into P4 Golden, what I found was something truly amazing. Now the game is something of a masterpiece to me.
