A primer for fighting:
1. Feet shoulder width apart. Closer and you'll topple. Further apart and you'll have to uncrouch to move. Ideally, look up fencing or boxing footwork because honestly, if you don't have good footwork you're screwed.
2. Use the "listening with one hand under the chin" position. It doesn't look defensive, but you can snap on guard in a flash.
3. Dodge rather than deflect and deflect rather than block. When in doubt, pull up your forearms and protect your head.
4. Remain calm.
5. If possible, keep it a fist fight. Fist fights seldom put people in the hospital. It's better to lose a fist-fight and stumble away badly bruised than let it become a knife-fight. There's a lot to be said about folding knives which can be used as bludgeons when closed because you can pull it out and use it without escalating the fight.
6. A beer bottle is a great defense. Smash it on a corner and it makes such an evil-looking shank no one will want to go up against you.
7. Did I mention footwork? There are no good fighters in any field who do not have good footwork.
