At least for me, it sends a message that Sony had the desire to support their home console the longest out of the three major console competitors, so I personally do not think it was a mistake. Deciding to purchase a next-gen console is an investment, and one of the major factors that comes into play during that decision is determining how long that platform will be supported, and I imagine that there are many current PS3 owners willing to invest in a PS4 because Sony has shown that that they're still supporting their current console this late in the generation.
