I had a chat long ago with my buddy who is tech savvy. I m citing his opinions.
"separate psu can not provide any modern power regulation and management options. they only provide a rated voltage. say 12V. but, an internal psu can communicate with the machine on separate wires can provide console circuit extra protection."
