GT games sells even in low install base... GT3 was launched with a less than 10 million install base and it is the best selling GT ever. The choose for GT6 in PS3 is just development time... the GT for PS4 (already in development at almost one year) will be ready only in late 2014 or 2015... not before that. Even if they not release GT6 for PS3... the game for PS4 won't be ready for launch or even for the first year. |
I look at GT going to PS4 this way: Let's *pretend* GT6 would be possible for launch/1st year. Out of the approx. 10 million installed base (taking from GT5 numbers), how many of those are the HARDCORE GT fans that would undoubtedly buy a PS4 in its 1st year *especially* for GT6? 2 million? 5 million? I think you can have some good approximation of that hardcore fanbase looking at Nissan GT Academy 2012 players. I know around 1 million people downloaded and play Nissan Academy 2012. It was free, you didn't have to own GT5 to play it, but still, who calls himself a hardcore GT player and didn't play the Nissan GT Academy? But I know what you're thinking, it can't be the only measure because not even all hardcore GT fans care about the Academy. Still, I'd say there aren't more than 2 million really, REALLY hardcore GT fans, and then you would need to consider how many of them will have at least USD460 reserved for a PS4 and GT6. Of course there will be a couple (maybe) millions more who, maybe not as hardcore, but definitely fans or very interested in GT that would definitely pick up a PS4 in its first year mainly because of the presence of GT6 in its library.
I'll get to my point now. Whatever number of fans willing to pick up a PS4 for GT Sony already has in the bag. They will buy a PS4 at launch or whenever a GT game launches. It doesn't matter if they sell those many PS4 more in the first year or if they sell a good amount of them later in the lifecycle (2015 maybe), they're still selling them in the end to these group of loyal GT fans. PS4 will have more than enough great games to push hardware in its first year, especially at launch when many adopters buy the system no matter what, and at $399.99 makes it even easier for them and even prone to shortages.
