You could go down pipes to little bonus rooms since Super Mario Bros. on the NES, not sure that is a new innovation. I think it's a mission pack sequel of the best kind with some elements from other Mario titles like the different abilities of each character a la Super Mario 2 (USA). I think that he is very overexposed though, because in addition to the Mario adventure titles, he's in a lot of other first party nintendo titles like Smash Bros. and MARIO Kart. The lack of new IP's is hurting them.  Even though they make original titles and then swap out the characters and put nintendo characters into it for brand recognition, they are dilueding there brands that way.  If they made a new IP, I'm sure that they would be supported because it's nintendo and people will find out about it assuming it's good.  Repeating the franchises between consoles and handhelds makes people who aren't hardcore gamers feel like, gee I didn't even finish the last mario title, I don't feel the need to run out and spend 50 bucks on the newest one.  Where they may catch more peoples eyes by showing off a new world and characters and installing a new base for future games.
