You can play most of your PS2 games on the PS3 if you have the 80Gb, you can't with a 40Gb as it has no backward compatibility.
Guitar Hero 2 is the exception as your controller won't work on the PS3.
You can transfert your memory card onto the PS3 and then create a fake memory card on the PS3 hardrive ( you need to buy a cheap memory card adapter for the transfert, i think it cost like 10$).
I have no clue if you can transfert your saves back to the PS2 memory card after playing on the PS3 though but I don't know why anyone would want to do that.
PS : God of War 2 will definitly work on the PS3 80Gb, I had never finished it on my PS2 so restarted it from scratch on the PS3 and finished the whole game there without any problem..
