You should really play the rest to understand better why the series is so good! Even tough the story isn't THAAAAT good it's cool and t the interaction with your team mates was the best part of it. Also the gameplay is kind of weird but you get the hang of it in no time, and i never had problems with cover :O
Yeah the ending does suck but the game itself is awesome xD.
