Microsoft pressured Sony into it. We were talking about this a while back how Sony would eventually start charging and they didnt. PSN+ was the creation that came out of finding an alternate way to make people pay and even Microsoft is taking that now. They aren't locking people out of complete online experience like MS is doing, they are just makingt he multiplayer a PSN+ Perk.
