One might consider anything under 50m a failure for a follow up system that sold near 100m as of now. However, I bet that even if Wii U sells under 50m that Nintendo will still make more profit. Look at the overall profit or lack of for Microsoft and Sony game divisions. They only wish they could make as much money as Nintendo has made in the video game industry. Sony isn't even close to Nintendo considering they suffered huge losses with the PS3 during first few years. Microsoft only started positive years in game division after years of huge losses. Nintendo knows how to make money. Sony and Microsoft only know how to spend money trying to keep or expand their userbase. So your definition of success/failure obviously doesn't include profit which is the most important part.
