The more I think about Joel's decision, the more I wonder if it was worth it.

I think David really changed Ellie. She was obviously distraught with the lack of humanity those people displayed. It disgusted her. When she faced David, and had to slaughter him or else face rape and murder, I think she lost faith in "just surviving" at that point. She hated what these people had become, and I think she resented Joel a little bit after that because he displays many of the same brutal qualities as David. When they reach Salt Lake, she is obviously not as trusting of Joel, and not the same happy go lucky Ellie. The giraffe scene breaks the tension, but she doesn't seem like the same girl as before David. Then when she wakes up, she definitely knows something is up. Joel hastily constructs that lie about what happened, and she can tell. Then when they are walking to Tommy's camp, it seems to me like the relationship that was there is gone, replaced with a parasitic relationship. Joel needs Ellie, he has effectively replaced Sarah with Ellie. She is his baby girl now. Joel has stripped Ellie of her purpose, a purpose that she wanted, and then lied to her about it twice. She knows this, I don't think that the good father/daughter dynamic that they had will ever be the same. I don't think Ellie is going to stay with Joel.

To me, it's a more tragic ending then if either of them had died. I feel for Joel, he is the most real character I have seen in a game. But his actions are deplorable to say the least, and despite those actions, he still is not going to really get what he wants. The Ellie he loved died with David, and this Ellie isn't going to be around long.
