The gameplay and the story are mixed very well and the tension is there throughout the game. If you watch Adam Sessler's review on Rev3, he says he wouldn't describe the game as "fun" but "dark and grim." He compares it to watching a movie. Not all movies are necessarily fun to watch, but they catch your interest and have you connect to the characters and feel emotionally attached to them. That is how The Last Of Us is. If you play the entire game through, from start to finish, you will feel as if you have just experienced something amazing. This game received many perfect scores from reviewers for a reason.
