Well he didn't even give her the choice. He made the choice for her and lied because she makes him happy.

That can be perceived as selfish.

Joel probably can't be considered a humane character. Atleast you're lead to believe he killed innocent people for his survival.

Everyone kills for their survival. Thats "normal" nowadays.

Just like how in the old ages, marrying off a teen girl to an older man was seen as normal. Which is also why what David feels for Ellie can be seen through more than one way (even though he goes full rapist later on kinda XD). And the cannibalism is needed for survival. Times are different.

As for killing innocent people, weren't most trying to kill him too?
