I'm crazy about my loot too. I went in knowing resources would be scarce, so I barely use anything and I'm super careful with each approach. It's an awesome feeling making it through an encounter having not used many resources if any at all.

The bow and arrow. If I couldn't sneak my way around clickers, I'd head shot them with my bow and arrow. This is extremely useful because it doesn't alert nearby infected, AND you can retrieve the used arrow most of the time if it was a clean hit.

I love that method.  I started doing that the other night after my first encounter after getting the bow.  I'm always so pissed when an arrow breaks because I'm such a loot hoarder
