Now, let's look at your CPU and GPU, much weaker than a server's CPU of course. Except that we are talking about GHz here, so nanoseconds here, not milliseconds. Cloud gaming, for example, was interesting, because for 30 images/s, a ping of 50ms is enough. So the server can run the game, while taking your inputs and sending back the images. 30 milliseconds to send the input, a millisecond to make the calculations, 30 milliseconds to get the image back. Now, cloudprocessing and the "infinite power of the cloud" : The client send a problem, the server resolve it and send the answer. Approximatively 65 milliseconds with a great ping. For big calculations, that's fucking great. For most of your CPU/GPU usage, that's totally slow. Some things, of course, can be better with the cloud. On a solo game, the only thing would be lighting, for almost anything else, it would be too slow, if I remember correctly. Now, some multiplayer online games could benefit it. But seriously, do you think that making calculation server side and send it to the client is new ? It always freaking existed, it was slightly improved lately, it now has a cool name so it's cool now. |
Misinformed was maybe too strong :)
Having a server and doing remote computation is not new...
Now cloud computing and the way Microsoft and Amazon are doing it "is" new (well at least for few years)... You can disagree but the industry in general think otherwise.
No need to use "freaking" everywhere by the way to convince me.
I think you just take the "cloud" as a generic term when in fact it implies a lot of other things.
