It's not a one time activation. If your console acts funny and you need to reset it to factory settings you'll have  to download the patch again.

And that's where one of the issues lie. No one knows how hard it will be to get the patch down the road.

This is a problem mainly for launch window X1s, as I'm sure later consoles will have the patch preinstalled.

No you won't.  You're obviously not an Xbox 360 gamer.

The update will be a firmware update, which once applied does not revert.  Ever. 

This is why JTAGed Xbox 360 consoles could not be updated with the latest firmware.
