JoeFlex said: I have a question. Slightly off topic. So now discs run directly from the console, what does this mean for Microsoft and Sony with respect to royalties? Is the situation any different from the setup they had before with the instal? (payments or avoiding it rather). If you find me ignorant, then by all means enlighten me. Thank you in advance. |
I'm sure someone else can explain in better detail. I do know that Sony plays a major part in the Blu-Ray Disc Association (BDA). If Sony owns part of the Blu-Ray technology, Sony gets a small cut from all media sales. Vague, I know. Could someone else plesse shed more light on this?

Thanks for responding. That's my impression. I heard since it was not running off the disc before due to installs they would avoid paying Sony. Providing that is true, it would seem they would have to pay them now. But, one can never be sure with these things, so I just wanted clarification. Thanks again for your thoughts.

Well, I do know that Toshiba gets a cut for every DVD media sold, and there is a start up fee to a "DVD association" if you want to start making and pressing DVD's. This I why Toshiba tried to maintain that cashflow by introducing HD-DVDs. I believe this similarly applies to Blu-Ray as well.
