Can indie developers stop showing off how nerdy they are by making 8-bit/16-bit games?

I completely disagree. For starters its unfair to lump all independent games with (relatively) simple graphics into a single pool of "lazy" games. Secondly, some of the best games we've gotten in the past few years have been simple-looking indie games. Retro City Rampage, shown in the OP, is one of the best games of 2012, for example.
