If it wasn't permanant, then they are digging themselves a massive grave.
Think about the backlash they got about everything before the console has launched.
The backlash they would get after people have bought the console would be incredibly massive.

I think they will keep with this current policy untill it's competitors change theirs or the next generation launches.

I would imagine it is permanent.  Though, some things don't add up.  Like why does there have to be a Day 1 patch for it?  Why not just ship the console with the patch?  Or take out the parts of the OS code that is used for DRM?  I mean, it's not like we're mere weeks away from launch.  They still have 5 months til launch.  It just seems kinda fishy.
