I don't know. Why do Canada, Europe, and many other countries do all sorts of stupid things? The simple fact that they do something does not mean that there is a good reason they do it. This "maybe it will kill you!!!!!!!!!!!!1111 (but maybe not, we just can't know!!!!11)" mentality is the same one behind the anti-vaccine movement. If you are going to posit that GMOs are dangerous, or that germ theory is incorrect after all, or that a person is a witch, then the onus of proof is on you. That which is asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.
