I'm starting to think that Valve is too focused on Steam and too little focused on making games.

It's not really Steam so much as it is the general lack of focus, they are working on so many different projects. It's not just Steam, there is their hardware projects (now downsized), augmented reality, VR, Source engine, Gabe's prediction market stuff whatever that is, Linux ports, Dota 2 and all the meta stuff around it etc etc. I guess that is the downside of letting everyone decide what they want to work on, their focus ends up split up int a million different directions.

That only makes it worst.

Being "a group of pals just working on what we want" is fine when you are small Co., but past a certain size you need someone to say "you do this and you do that, end of the story".
