Yeah the battery was completely dead after 3 years. I use normal AA recharcheables now. I always have a bunch stuck in the charger for Wii motes, balance board, 360 controllers, camera's, kids toys. I use my laptop to charge ps3 controllers, those batteries still charge fine.

From what I've heard the new play and charge is much better than the 360 one. It was completely redesigned with a shorter charge time and a much longer playtime before needing to charge. I heard 30+ hours of play time between charges.
