They possibly simply did not expect this kind of response. Amazon is neutral, they have no wish to anger or embarrass one supplier or another (except, perhaps, Nintendo). They might have ended it on their own for that reason or agreed to end it early after being asked by Microsoft. It's probably the right decision.
There is also the possibility that they suspected foul play. It's hard to look at those numbers and not wonder.
